Surge In Identity Thefts In Wheaton

Suspect(s) even opened a fraudulent account using information from a local church in Wheaton.

WHEATON, IL — Wheaton Police reported a surge in identity theft in the week preceding Thanksgiving. The suspect(s) use their victims' social security numbers, names, addresses, and other information to open fraudulent accounts and perform transactions.

Nov. 13

Shortly after midnight, suspect(s) used information from Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 N. West St., to open a fraudulent account. The offender(s) used this information to charge money to multiple people throughout the country.

At approximately 1 p.m., someone used a resident's social security number and personal information in an attempt to obtain employment. The incident took place in the 1800 block of Washinton.

A resident in the 1500 block of Glencoe reported that someone used their information to order a cellphone that was delivered to their personal address. The incident took place at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 17

Suspect(s) used a resident's information to make fraudulent credit card purchases. The resident reported the incident at approximately 7:59 p.m. in the 500 block of Wesley St.
