WHEATON, IL — A Wheaton College freshman was killed this afternoon in an accident at a track and field meet at Lawson Park in Wheaton. The victim was volunteering at the event when he was hit by a hammer that was used in the competition.

The student was identified as Ethan Roser, according to Fox 32. Eyewitnesses said Roser was struck in the head by an errant track and field “hammer,” a heavy ball affixed to a wire that can weigh up to 16 pounds.

As news of Roser’s death spread across the campus of Wheaton College, students held a candlelight vigil at Lawson Park in his memory, WGN News reported. Roser, a freshman transfer student, played soccer for Wheaton College.
