Wheaton Police Warn About Potential 'Storm Damage Scams'

Wheaton officials say to be wary of door-to-door salesmen claiming to offer repairs for storm damages.

WHEATON, IL -- After violent thunderstorms caused damage to several trees and homes throughout Wheaton Thursday, local police are warning residents to beware of scams that seek to capitalize on storm damage. Officials say they have gotten calls from "concerned residents" who have been visited by people who claim to be from companies that can offer repair to damaged roofs and fallen trees.

It's not uncommon for scammers to pose as construction workers or repair people in an effort to burglarize a person's home.

City officials recommend that homeowners always use caution when dealing with someone who claims to be a contractor or repair person. As a precaution, residents should ask to see business credentials, licenses, and proof of insurance before allowing someone to perform an estimate for repair.
