Wheaton's very own leprechaun got a moment in the spotlight again this St. Patrick's Day. Bernie Hurley, 92, was a long-time fixture of Wheaton parades where he dressed in a leprechaun costume and entertained crowds, according to a city of Wheaton press release. The city of Wheaton, in its Wheaton Remembers history series this week, interviewed Hurley, who was also a gym teacher for 31 years at Hawthorne and Emerson Elementary School.
Hurley taught and coached thousands of Wheaton students. He also is a World War II veteran who fought under the direction of General Patton. In addition, Bernie played a role in helping create the Illinois Prairie Path and lead Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission. He also helped establish the DuPage Heritage Gallery.
