WHEATON, IL -- The Roosevelt Road pedestrian underpass in Wheaton has been closed since 2017, but that may not be the case for long. City officials are currently reviewing options for the underpass, which is located on Wheaton Avenue and have made an online survey for residents to share their input.

Some of the options presented in the survey include closing and filling the underpass, reopening the pedestrian underpass after structural repairs, and replacing the underpass with a new underpass that is ADA-compliant and accessible by bicycle.

In the survey, city officials projected the potential cost and life expectancy of each option. Closing the underpass is the most inexpensive option, with a projected cost of $60,000.

If the city chooses to repair the underpass with a new liner and stairs, the cost is projected at $330,500 and would give the underpass a life expectancy of around 50 years.

The city also presented an option of creating a new ADA-compliant underpass that would cost around $2.3 million. This option would give the Roosevelt Road underpass a life expectancy of around 80 years, but would require traffic closures on Roosevelt during its construction, officials said.
