A student at a Christian college who used a “spy view camera watch” to secretly record a female student as she showered faces criminal charges, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced.

Alexander Lim, 24, of Wheaton appeared in court Tuesday morning where he was charged with felony unauthorized video recording.

Prosecutors said that at approximately 6 p.m. Feb. 22, the woman was taking a shower in a campus apartment owned by Wheaton College when she noticed what appeared to be a watch directly facing her. She also noticed the watch had a video lens on its face and immediately contacted campus police, who notified the Wheaton Police Department.

An investigation revealed the gadget was a “spy view camera watch” that Lim had allegedly placed in the apartment’s bathroom.

Prosecutors said Lim had been secretly video recording the woman showering since last October. The college student was taken into custody Monday evening without incident. An investigation into the matter continues.

“People expect and are entitled to complete privacy while in their residence,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. “The invasion of privacy alleged in this case is beyond disturbing and will be met with the full force of the law. I would like to thank the authorities at Wheaton College for bringing this matter to the attention of law enforcement and for their complete cooperation throughout the entire investigation.”

The college also issued a statement saying it would cooperate fully with the police investigation.

“The actions that Mr. Lim is accused of would be a violation of college policies and the community covenant we agree to live by,” said Wheaton College Vice President for Student Development Paul Chelsen. “We are eager to comply with the authorities investigating this matter, and will provide ongoing care to everyone affected by this situation.”

The college student appeared before DuPage County Judge Robert Russo, who set bail at $75,000. Lim’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 23 in front of Judge John Kinsella. If convicted of the charge, Lim faces up to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
