Wheaton Warns Residents Of Ruse Burglary Attempts

Police say the burglars claim to be checking for possible water contamination.

WHEATON, IL — Wheaton city officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for a ruse burglary in which the burglars say they need to check the resident's water line for possible contamination. At least one resident has been the target of this scam, according to a news release from the city.

Police say a suspect came to the resident's home saying they were from a utility company and needed to check the water for contamination. Once inside the home, the suspect distracted the resident while other suspects came inside and burglarized the home.

Residents are reminded that the city's Water Division is not coming to homes to check for water contamination. If you are approached by someone claiming to be from the water company, ask for credentials. If the person cannot provide credentials, refuse to allow them into your home and immediately report the incident to the Wheaton Police Department by calling 911.
