Winfield Library to Host Military Service Dog Program for Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day program celebrates military service dogs and veterans with a special appearance from Hairy Pawter

WINFIELD, IL – Winfield Public Library will host the “Smoky the War Dog: Featuring a Visit from Hairy Pawter” on Nov. 12.

The program, in honor of Veteran’s Day, will discuss Smoky, a military service dog and the first therapy dog and her owner and trainer Bill Wynne.

Smoky was discovered at the bottom of a foxhole and became a decorated war dog. She entertained injured servicemen during World War II, earning battle stars and medals for bravery.

“War dogs and therapy dogs are so commonplace, yet most people don’t realize their unexpected origins,” said Dawn Leardi, adult programming librarian. “This program will make us appreciate them even more than we already do.”

Storyteller Adrian Brigham and recording artist Denise Brigham will present the program. They will be joined by therapy dog “Hairy Pawter,” who is the same breed as Smoky. Only attendees will discover the breed of Smoky and Hairy Pawter, which may surprise you!
