WILMETTE, IL — All Wilmette beaches are closed Thursday, and several programs have been canceled due to poor air quality, village officials announced.
Current air quality levels have reached a range considered unhealthy, particularly for children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions, according to the village. Outdoor activities, including swimming, sunbathing, and recreational sports, are not recommended until air quality improves.
All swimming and sailing beaches are closed as well as the Centennial Family Aquatic Center. Footloose The Musical has been rescheduled for Sunday.
Operations have also been adjusted for the following activities:
The village said the closures will remain in effect until air quality conditions improve to levels considered safe for public recreation. Conditions are being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
The advisory affects both residents and visitors planning time outdoors at the lakefront. The village encouraged people to avoid prolonged outdoor activity, keep windows and doors closed when possible, use air conditioning or portable air cleaners if available, follow guidance from local public health officials, and check current air quality conditions before planning outdoor activities.
