Bitcoin Mail Scam Fails; 5 Holes Punched In School Shed: Blotter

WILMETTE, IL — The following information comes from the Wilmette Police Department as a record of police activity and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Anyone named below is innocent unless their guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

INCIDENTS

CAR BURGLARIES
A resident of the 1700 block of Elmwood Avenue reported on April 26 that someone had pried opened a window and broken into a vehicle sometime on April 15 or 16. Nothing was reported missing, but the window was damaged.

BITCOIN MAIL FRAUD (ATTEMPT)
A Prairie Avenue resident reported on April 20 that they had gotten an anonymous letter postmarked from Birmingham, Alabama. The letter said if the resident didn't send $8,300 worth of Bitcoin to an address provided in the letter he would release some kind of damaging information to the resident's wide. The resident did not fall victim to this scam.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Cambridge Lane resident reported on April 21 that someone had used their personal information to make a fraudulent federal income tax filing.

BICYCLE THEFT
A resident in the 600 block of Lake Avenue reported on April 21 that someone stole their daughter's orange Raleigh Talus 2 bicycle from a driveway.

CAR BURGLARY
A resident in the 1900 block of Wilmette Avenue reported on April 27 that someone stole a purse, a cell phone and prescription drugs from an unlocked vehicle sometime after April 17.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 700 block of Laporte Avenue reported on April 27 that sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. that day someone had damaged the back window of a minivan parked in front of their home.

CAR BURGLARIES
Two unlocked vehicles parked in driveways were burglarized during the overnight hours of April 28 and 29 in the 2200 blocks of Greenwood Avenue and Beechwood Avenue. In one of the them, someone stole a pair of sunglasses. In the other, someone stole two sets of golf clubs and a license plate.

HARASSMENT
A resident in the 3500 block of Lake Avenue reported on April 29 that his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend had been harassing him and his life-in girlfriend with unwanted texts, social media messages and phone calls.

THEFT
Someone reportedly stole documents from a safety deposit box at the Chase Bank between Dec. 17, 2014 and April 23.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A school staffer reported on April 30 that someone had punched five holes into the walls of a shed school property in the 600 block of Prairie Avenue between April 27 and April 30.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone reportedly used a key to scratch a vehicle parked on the street in front of a home in the 1200 block of North Branch Drive between April 25 and 30.

BURGLARY
A resident of the 1200 block of Isabella Street reported on May 1 that between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. that morning someone stole a snow blower from an open garage.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Sheridan Road resident reported getting a letter between April 26 and 29 notifying them that someone in Delaware had tried to open a credit card in their name using a fake ID with all their personal information.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICE
A Ridge Road resident reported on May 2 that someone had tried to deposit a fraudulent $1,900 check using their North Shore Community Bank business.

FRAUD
A Lake Avenue resident discovered someone had made nine unauthorized withdrawals totaling more than $1,700 from an account on May 1 and 2. Five of them were confirmed to have taken place at two Chicago locations.

ARRESTS

A 47-year-old Chicago man was pulled over for a minor traffic violation at 1:10 p.m. on April 20 in the 2600 block of Lake Avenue and found to not have a valid driver's license.

A 45-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 3:25 p.m. on April 27 and charged with driving on a suspended license following a traffic crash investigation near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Hibbard Road.

A 27-year-old Chicago woman was arrested at 12:30 p.m. on April 30 and charged with driving with a suspended license after she was pulled over for a minor traffic violation in the 3600 block of Lake Avenue.

A 28-year-old Wood Dale man was arrested at 6:41 a.m. on May 1 and charged with driving with a suspended license following an investigation into a traffic crash near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Locust Road.
