WILMETTE, IL — Burglars targeted ATMs at a pair of Wilmette convenience stores last week before fleeing onto the Edens Expressway when encountered by an officer, police said.

A burglar alarm alerted police that someone broke into the Wilmette Food Mart, 531 Green Bay Road, shortly after 1:45 a.m. Friday, according to Wilmette police.

The intruders stole tobacco products, alcohol and a store ATM for an unknown loss, police said.

Just five minutes after the first alarm, police said the same burglars broke into the BP gas station at 901 Green Bay Road.

They stole cash and tobacco products, but this time they were unable to make off with the ATM because it was bolted to the floor, according to police.

About an hour after the first burglary, police said, a Wilmette officer noticed the suspect vehicle and several people in front of the Shell gas station at 3501 Lake Ave.

The "offenders" got into the car and drove away south on Interstate 94, according to a statement from police.

Patch requested any descriptions of the getaway car, the suspects or any images captures from surveillance video.

"We are continuing to investigate and develop leads related to the vehicle and suspects," Cmdr. Mike Clark said Wednesday in an email. "There is no other information to release right now."
