Car Thefts And Burglaries On The Rise In Wilmette Area

The Wilmette Police Department shared some tips to help residents avoid being victimized by car thieves and burglars.

WILMETTE, IL — Wilmette police urged residents to remain vigilant due to rising crimes involving vehicle thefts and burglaries in nearby areas.

In several recent cases outside the village, suspects have been armed and have shot at property owners when confronted, police said.

"Property can be replaced — people cannot. Lock doors, stay aware, and let police handle public safety incidents so you and your community stay safe," the Wilmette Police Department said in a statement.

Due to the rise in these incidents, law enforcement gave some tips to help residents stay safe.

  • Lock every door - Homes, garages and cars should always be locked when you are parked, even if you are just stepping away.
  • Keep your keys with you - Never leave your keys or key fobs inside your car or in a visible location.
  • Install safety measures - Security cameras and/or motion cameras can help deter crime and can help provide evidence in the event of an incident.
  • Think safely - Always try to park in well-lit, busy areas when possible.

If you see someone exhibiting suspicious behavior, such as looking into vehicles, testing door handles or loitering around parked cars, do not walk up to them. Instead, police suggest that drivers go to a well-lit area and call 911 to inform authorities about truly suspicious activity.
