Garages, Unlocked Cars Entered In Wilmette

Wilmette police followed up on dozens of reports of thieves entering unlocked cars and garages in one night.

WILMETTE, IL - A wave of crime hit Wilmette one night last week with more than a dozen incidents of unlocked cars having been entered, one reported residential burglary and two non-residential burglary incidents.

Wilmette police said in a report they believe it is the same offenders who committed all these crimes reported during the overnight hours of Oct. 18 and Oct. 19.

Nothing was taken in the residential burglary, which police said occurred when an attached garage in the 2100 block of Chestnut was entered and searched. Two unlocked cars in the driveway of the residence were also entered.

Three unlocked detached garages, one in the 2300 block of Kenilworth, one in the 2200 block of Cleveland and one in the 1200 block of Hunter, were also entered. A GPS was taken from the garage on Hunter.

That night, the offenders entered 24 unlocked cars in Wilmette. Many of these reports were made on Kenilworth and Chestnut. Sunglasses, money, golf clubs and binoculars were among the items reported stolen.

Police did not provide a description of any suspects, and noted in a report that two of the victims who awoke during the night and heard suspicious activity did not immediately call police. One victim on Fairway Drive heard cars being slammed at 12:30 a.m. and a resident on Chestnut woke up at 2:45 a.m. as the garage service door alarm went off.
