Go Green Wilmette’s Booth at Wilmette Summerfest 2014

Wilmette’s Summerfest 2014 took place, rain and shine on July 11th and 12th and there was a good attendance.  Go Green Wilmette volunteers manned their booth and had the chance to intrigue children with “Go Green Wilmette” stickers, magnifying glasses, books on birds, coloring bird pictures and more.  Adults were treated to information on reducing the use of pesticides, solar energy, lists of safe food, how and where to recycle and composting.  This was a wonderful opportunity for community interaction and thousands of visitors were greeted.  Dogs of every size and shape attracted attention.

Many visitors were delighted to learn about the Alternative Yard Tour.  This is a wonderful event where eight Wilmette residents will open their yards to visitors from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday July 20th. Visitors can join one of two guided bicycle tours or view the sites independently. Bike tours will leave from Starbucks at Plaza del Lago and Wilmette Public Library promptly at 9:00 a.m. For more details see: www.gogreenwilmette.org. Go Green Wilmette is really excited that each of the eight houses on the tour has a unique sustainable feature to offer. The owners of the yards are all passionate gardeners.  Addresses will be published on our website several days before the event. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be canceled. Check our website at 8am the day of the event. The tour is free.

Some visitors were very interested in using Solar Energy.  This is a “hot” topic this summer because solar is the cheapest it has ever been for Illinois homeowners. The World Wildlife Fund along with the Environmental Law & Policy Center has a special offer. Wilmette residents can achieve a price discount of over 25% by pooling the purchasing power of the community.  The discount increases as more people contract for solar electricity. When the Alternative Yard Tour makes its stop at Beth Drucker’s yard, not only can one see composting in action and native plants but there will be the added opportunity to see solar energy at work and learn more about it.
