Man Killed By Metra Train in Wilmette

Witnesses say man stood in front of northbound Metra train at the Wilmette Avenue crossing.

The person hit by a Union Pacific North Line Metra train in Wilmette Tuesday afternoon has died.

Witnesses reported that an adult man walked around the lowered train gates at the Wilmette Avenue crossing, then stopped and stood in front of a northbound commuter train around 3:51 p.m., according to police.

The subject died at the scene and he has been taken to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Officer. Police are not yet releasing the identification of the victim pending notification of the next of kin.

According to earlier reports, Train No, 331 left Chicago at 3:20 p.m. and was due to arrive in Winnetka at 3:56 p.m. As a result of the investigation, inbound and outbound trains were being halted near Wilmette.

Normal service began again around 5:20 p.m., according to the Chicago Tribune. Officials had earlier begun to service stops between Ogilvie and Davis Street in Evanston.
