On Sunday, March 23, Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah, Wilmette held its
annual Mitzvah Day, a day of giving back to the community and repairing the world.
Congregants of all ages participated in many worthwhile acts. Among the many
activities that took place was making 600 sandwiches that were delivered to churches
and organizations in the community that feed the hungry - Evanston Ecumenical Council,
St. Marks Church, Edgewater Care for Real and Connections for the Homeless at the
Lake Street Church.
In conjunction with New Life for Old Bags, recycled plastic grocery bags were woven
and magically transformed into sleeping mats for the homeless. Academy students
created friendship bracelets for residents at the Riverside Foundation in Lincolnshire,
a facility that teaches life skills and enrichment opportunities to adults with developmental
disabilities. As the need for blood donations continues, there was also a blood drive and
a letter writing campaign on various public advocacy issues.
Jeff Roth and Jan Mahler chaired and supervised Mitzvah Day.
