Rack*It Bike Tour on Saturday, May 9 in Wilmette

On May 9th, the District 39 Educational Foundation will host the Rack*It Bike Tour, unveiling two new public art bike racks in Wilmette

At the start of the 2014-2015 school year, the District 39 Educational Foundation’s Fine Arts Committee launched our Rack*It public arts program. Art teachers from all six Wilmette schools incorporated a creative bike rack design project into their curricula to get K-8 students involved in this new community-wide event.

Kids created bike designs using the theme “Wilmette community” and each school submitted five drawings to a Design Committee, comprised of teachers from the D39 Art Department, Foundation members, cycling advocates, and community stakeholders. The committee chose two designs to be “brought to life” on bike racks by a metal fabricator this spring.

On May 9, 2015, the Educational Foundation is proud to host the Rack*It Bike Tour to commemorate the unveiling of our two new bike racks in Wilmette. D39 Foundation volunteers will lead a parade of cyclists between the two locations of the new bike racks, Wilmette Village Hall and the Wilmette Community Recreation Center. Riders will gather at Village Hall for the first ribbon cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. Then, waves of 20 riders at a time will follow the D39 safe-biking routes and parade to the Community Recreation Center for the second unveiling at approximately 9 a.m.
