Tossing Lit Cigarette Into Dry Grass Not Best Way for Dad to Show Daughter Dangers of Fire

The Highland Park father was trying to teach his kid a lesson about open flames, Wilmette police say.

Wilmette, IL—Teaching by example isn't always the best way to get a point across.

That's something Gennaldy Gandelman found out when he wanted to give his daughter a life lesson about what an open flame can do if you're not careful, according to Wilmette police.

Gandelman, 43, of the 1000 block of Deerfield Road, Highland Park, was cited June 19 for disorderly conduct and damage to village property after he tossed a lit cigarette into dry tallgrass covered with cottonwood buds in the 700 block of Michigan Avenue, police say.
