Winnetka Man Charged With DUI After 2-Vehicle Crash: Cops

DUI

Harry Monroe, 59, of the 39100 block of North Bernice Terrace, Beach Park, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after being found asleep at the wheel in his running car.

At about 12:54 a.m. May 12, police checked on a vehicle with its engine running that was parked in a lot in the 3200 block of Lake Avenue. The officer found Monroe asleep behind the wheel when he approached the vehicle.

While talking with Monroe, the officer reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol on Monroe's breath. The driver also failed field sobriety tests and was taken in to custody.

At the police station, Monroe took a breath test, and his blood-alcohol content was 0.165, twice the legal limit of 0.08.

DUI

Kurt B. Degroot, 44, of the 500 block of Orchard Lane, Winnetka, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after an May 20 accident.

Officers responded at about 11:08 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash near Ridge Road and Kenilworth Avenue. At the scene, Degrott, who was identified by police as the offending driver, was found to be intoxicated, according to the police report. He then failed field sobriety tests and was taken in to custody.
