2 Rescued As Sailboat Capsizes Off Maple Street Beach

Multiple fire department and Coast Guard rescuers responded to a capsized catamaran Tuesday afternoon near a Winnetka beach.

WINNETKA, IL — Two people were rescued after their boat capsized in Lake Michigan Tuesday afternoon. The Coast Guard and several local fire departments responded to the water off Maple Street Beach in Winnetka before the boater were safely returned to Wilmette Harbor, police said.

Crews from a Glencoe boat and two Coast Guard boats helped the two sailors in distress right their boat after receiving the call around 3:40 p.m. and returned with them to harbor, Winnetka Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky told Pioneer Press.

Crews from Evanston, Glencoe, Highland Park, Northfield and Wilmette assisted with the rescue efforts, according to Pioneer Press. Coast Guard and Chicago police helicopters were initially requested but were not needed.

Coast Guard officials described the boat as a 16-foot catamaran that capsized about 1,000 from the shore, Wilmette Life reported, seemingly due to a collapsed sail.
