Another DUI Charge for Former Winnetka Village Trustee

Police in Northfield say Jennifer Spinney smelled of alcohol and was driving on a flat tire on Willow Road last week.

NORTHFIELD, IL - Former Winnetka Village Trustee Jennifer Spinney was charged with several crimes including fleeing from police and a DUI last week after she was pulled over in Northfield regarding a 911 call about a dangerous driver. Spinney was allegedly driving on the bare rim of one of her vehicle’s tires at Willow Road and Hibbard Road on Nov. 30 and charged with aggravated DUI, operating unsafe equipment, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, fleeing from police and driving on a suspended license, according to a Winnetka Talk report.

The arrest is the former Council member’s second for DUI in the last five years. She was given court-ordered supervision for a DUI on McCormick Boulevard in Skokie in 2012, one that occurred while Spinney was a member of Winnetka village government.

Last week, police said Spinney was weaving within her lane of traffic as police drove behind her for more than a mile with their emergency lights and siren on. One of the tires was flat, police said, and sparks were flying as she drove on the metal rim.

The car stopped as Spinney hit a curb, according to police, who also said Spinney had trouble getting out of the vehicle, smelled of alcohol and refused field sobriety tests.

Spinney was on the Village Council from 2009 to 2012. Her last DUI came during her stint as a trustee.

Then, in Sept. 2012, she allegedly told a Skokie police officer that the police there have nothing better to do, that she was not a criminal and just a drunk driver and wanted to go home to sleep it off.

Two police officers drove her home following that arrest after she was booked at the station and posted bond.
