Demo Sale of Historic Women's Library Club of Glencoe Building Friday and Saturday

The 76-year-old building is being razed and architectural pieces and decorative items are for sale.

The following was submitted by the Women’s Library Club of Glencoe:

For 76 years, The Women’s Library Club of Glencoe building, located at 372 Tudor Court in Glencoe, has been the place for Club members to come together in friendship and solidarity.

“This building holds a special place in the hearts of our members and an untold number of wonderful memories,” said Roberta Olshansky, past President, Women’s Library Club of Glencoe. Olshansky is also a Glencoe Co-Chair of the Writers Theater “On To A New Stage” fundraising campaign. “We are looking forward to the Club’s future in the gorgeous new Writers Theater building that is to come.”

The Women’s Library Club of Glencoe donated the aging building, built in 1938, to the Glencoe-based Writers Theater organization and will enjoy use of the facilities for club activities and special Club member-related building usage benefits in perpetuity. The Club retains possession of the land. The demolition of the existing building, to date also the Writers Theater main performance location, is scheduled to take place September 2. Groundbreaking for the new, Studio Gang-designed Writers Theater facility will be in the fall of 2014.

“For the past 76 years, our Club has made a meaningful difference, both in the lives of its members and in our community,” stated Max Retsky, the Club’s newly installed board President. “I am excited to help lead the club through its next chapter, working with our long-term members and a large influx of new members, all all with a shared interest in joining together, and in giving back to the community. We are very grateful to the Glencoe Park District and the Glencoe Public Library for giving us rooms to use for events and meetings until our new home in the Writers Theater building is available following the planned Grand Opening in early 2016.”

DEMOLITION SALE PLANNED FOR AUGUST 29 AND AUGUST 30
The Club recognizes that many people would be interested in items contained inside the building, and is inviting the general public to its demolition sale which will take place Friday August 29 and Saturday August 30, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the 325 Tudor Court Location.

The building will also make scrap metal available for purchase. All items are priced to sell; cash only, please. ABOUT THE WOMEN’S LIBRARY CLUB OF GLENCOE
The Women’s Library Club of Glencoe (the third women’s club in Illinois and the 61st in the country) began in 1872 as a small group of friends who gathered to read and discuss classical and contemporary literature.

As their collection of books grew they made them available to the public and operated this “library” out of their first clubhouse at 654 Greenleaf Avenue. This continued until 1908 when the entire collection was donated to become the nucleus of the new Glencoe Public Library. Over the years the original social and intellectual purpose of the group has been expanded to promote the welfare, social, intellectual and philanthropic interests of the Glencoe community, most recently expanding to incorporate support of the North Shore Exchange, Glencoe’s successful nonprofit upscale resale shop which launched in 2013. The North Shore Exchange was made possible in part thanks to start-up money generously donated by the Women’s Library Club of Glencoe. Club volunteers contribute toward the funding, development, promotion and running of the shop, which is staffed primarily by Club volunteers.
