Dog Bites Reported; Felony DUI, Identity Theft Arrests: Blotters

One accused identity thief was charged with continuing financial crimes enterprise, while another stole over $28,000: North Shore Blotters

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY
Someone entered a business in the 1600 block of Frontage Road and stole a set of tires and rims. The total loss was unknown at the time of the report.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Police learned around 11 p.m. on Sept. 30 that someone had moved and caused damage to a park bench worth about $400 in the first block of Park Avenue.
  • Someone scratched the passenger side of a 2019 Acura from the front to the rear prior to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 in the 9000 block of Green Bay Road.
  • At some point prior to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 7, someone entered a locked construction site in the first block of Maple Hill Road, damaging a gate.

SCAM ATTEMPT
A Lincoln Avenue resident reported on the morning of Oct. 1 that an unidentified man had called them claiming to be a grandson in need of $9,000 to post bail for a drug arrest. The resident hung up on the caller and contacted police.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Grove Street resident reported on Oct. 3 that someone had gained control over several of their accounts and stole about $28,000. The resident's banks refunded their loss and the investigation continues.

FORGERY
Someone stole checks from the 600 block of Dundee Road prior to 11:45 a.m. Oct. 5, cashing in several for a loss of more than $7,000.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Andres Betancourt-Munoz, 42, of the 1000 block of North Pulaski Road, Chicago, was arrested around 1 a.m. Sept. 29 in the area of Forestway Drive and Tower Road and charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol with previous DUI arrests, misdemeanor DUI and driving with a suspended license. He was also issued citations for not having insurance and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.

Amanda J. Smith, 27, of the 2600 block of Menominee Road, Waukegan, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the area of Dundee and Green Bay roads on an active arrest warrant for failure to appear in Will County court.

A 62-year-old Glencoe woman was issued citations around 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30 in the 1100 block of Fairfield Road for the offenses of dog bite and dog at large.

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFT
A Dickens Road resident reported on Sept. 23 that someone made an unauthorized withdrawal from a bank account.

NEIGHBOR DISPUTES

  • Police were called to the 100 block of Thackeray Lane by a homeowner who reported getting an anonymous note critical of caution tape the resident put around an area with newly planted grass seed. The resident wanted the incident documented but not investigated.
  • Officers were called to the 300 block of Jeffery Street by a homeowner who reported getting into an argument with a neighbor about the placement of garbage cans. Police offered advice on handling the situation.

ANIMAL BITE
A UPS driver reported that they had been bitten by a dog between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Sept. 25 while delivering a package to a home in the 2100 block of Middlefork Road. Police spoke with the dog's owner and completed an animal bite report with the Cook County Department of Animal Control.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized a car parked at the Sunset Ridge Country Club, 2100 Sunset Ridge Road, between 6 and 9 p.m. Sept. 19.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
An employee working in the 700 block of Frontage Road reported on the afternoon of Oct. 8 that someone had scratched their car while it was parked outside between 8:50 and 10:15 a.m. that day.

THEFT
A resident in the 300 block of Graemere Street reported that someone stole a lawnmower worth about $400 from a side yard of their home between Oct. 5 and Oct. 12.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Carlton Brooks, 31, of the 400 block of East 32nd Street, Chicago, was arrested around 8:30 a.m. Oct. 10 and charged with four counts of identity theft and one count of continuing financial crimes enterprise in connection with the unauthorized use of someone else's identity at the Walgreens, 1825 Willow Road.

INCIDENTS

THEFT

  • Someone stole a bicycle parked outside the Jewel-Osco at 411 Green Bay Road prior to 3:50 p.m. Sept. 26.
  • Someone stole a bicycle parked outside the Metra station at 722 Green Bay Road prior to 4:07 p.m. Sept. 25.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • An employee of a restaurant in the 1100 block of Wilmette Avenue reported on Sept. 28 that someone had broken the window of their vehicle while they were at work.
  • Someone damaged the rear window of a vehicle parked at a skilled nursing center in the 400 block of Poplar Drive between 7:10 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 3.
  • Someone damaged a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Maple Avenue between 6:35 p.m. Oct. 4 and 9 a.m. Oct. 5.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported that an unidentified man and woman stole multiple items from the shelf between 8 and 8:45 p.m. on Oct. 1.
  • Staff at the Jewel-Osco, 411 Green Bay Road, reported that an unidentified man stole miscellaneous items between 6:26 and 6:41 p.m.
  • Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported an unidentified man stole various items between 1:54 and 2 p.m. Oct. 8.
  • Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported that an unidentified man stole various over-the-counter medications between around 5:15 p.m. Oct. 10.

WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

FORGERY
Staff at the Walgreens, 925 Green Bay Road, reported that someone used counterfeit currency to buy five pre-paid Visa gift cards for $500 around 4:35 p.m. Sept. 24.

THEFT
Someone stole a locked bicycle worth $118 from a bike rack in the 600 block of Green Bay Trail between Sept. 21 and Sept. 25.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • An Arbor Vitae road resident reported that someone made several unauthorized transactions between June 6 and Aug. 10 and cashed fraudulent checks for a loss of more than $5,000.
  • A Brier Street resident reported that someone used their identity to make multiple unauthorized purchases for more than $5,000 between Sept. 23 and Sept. 25.
  • An Ash Street resident reported that someone used their identity to open lines of credit and attempt to make unauthorized purchases between Sept. 27 and Oct. 3. There was no reported loss.
  • A representative of a Lincoln Avenue business reported on Oct. 8 that they discovered on Sept. 6 that someone had initiated an unauthorized wire transfer for more than $1,800.
  • An Asbury Avenue resident reported on Oct. 10 that someone used their identity to open an unauthorized checking account between Oct. 5 and Oct. 10. There was no loss reported.

RETAIL THEFT
Staff at the Walgreens reported that someone stole nearly $1,100 worth of merchandise from the store shortly after 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1.

ILLEGAL DUMPING
A resident in the 300 block of White Oak Lane reported on the evening of Oct. 4 that someone had poured an unknown substance into a storm sewer drain, which prevented stormwater from draining, at some point between May 1 and June 3. The repair costs were unknown.
