Beyond Japan: Japanese Gardens in North America Through the Lens of the Midwest

This lecture explores the 150-year history of Japanese gardens in North America by focusing on Japanese-style gardens in Chicago and the Midwest. It explores gardens at world’s fairs, estates, and public institutions, and also analyzes the roles of American women and Japanese Americans in the construction of these gardens. It presents Japanese-style gardens in North America as a special type of American garden that signals how Americans have wanted to interpret Japanese culture.
