Facebook Marketplace Scam Alert: Don't Fall For It
The victim reported to police that after a couple suspect phone calls, they realized it was a scam.

GLENCOE, IL — Glencoe police got word of a scam from a July 19 report, according to a release from the department. Residents making purchases over Facebook should be aware.
The victim posted items for sale on Facebook and an "unknown person" contacted them over Facebook. They made arrangements to meet and make the exchange, but the unknown person never showed up. The victim messaged the person, but the account had been closed.
The victim searched on Google for a customer service number on Facebook and called, but the number was a fake. The victim "talked with someone [they] could not understand and hung up."

Police said the victim then got a call from a suspect who said the victim's Facebook account was hacked and that the victim needed to buy a $100 Google Play card.
The victim realized it was a scam and didn't purchase anything. Police got the report soon after 8 p.m.
