Homeless Puppies, Kittens, Dogs and Cats Available At Adoption Event

PAWS Chicago will host its annual 'Angels with Tails' adoption showcase in Winnetka this weekend.

WINNETKA, IL — Chicago's homeless animals will be peering out dozens of storefronts and sidewalks in Winnetka this weekend as PAWS Chicago hosts an adoption event. PAWS Chicago, the area's largest no-kill shelter, and four other local rescue and animal shelter organizations will be bringing homeless potential pets to 38 spots along Lincoln Avenue, Elm Street and Chestnut Street on Saturday, June 17 from noon to 4 p.m.

Angels with Tails Winnetka, presented by Winnetka Animal Hospital and sponsored by Merrick Pet Care, is an opportunity to see adoptable puppies, dogs, kittens and cats — all available for adoption — while strolling the sidewalks, organizers said. PAWS Chicago's partners include Chicago English Bulldog Rescue, Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue, Heartland Animal Shelter and Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue.

The goal of the event is to save lives through adoption and raise awareness around the issue of pet overpopulation and the needless killing of homeless animals. With so many litters being born during the spring season, in addition to the abundance of homeless pets in need of a loving home, more animals are at risk of euthanasia in overcrowded animal control and traditional “open door” shelters.

Last year, nearly 9,000 cats and dogs were killed in Chicago, according to the group. By promoting adoption, fostering, and spay/neuter, PAWS Chicago works to build a no-kill community where all healthy and treatable pets are given a second chance to find a loving home.

By rallying the community and generating more adoptions, PAWS says it's able to take in and save more dogs and cats from high-risk shelters. The organization points out that when people adopt a pet from a no-kill animal shelter or rescue organization, they save two lives–the pet they adopt and another pet who can take its place.
