Local Artists to Donate Handcrafted Bins for Mend Hunger Food Drives

Press release from Mend Hunger, a local nonprofit that provides no-cost allergy safe and gluten free food to local pantries.

NILES, APRIL 17, 2017 – Mend Hunger, a local 501(c)3 charitable nonprofit that provides no-cost allergy safe and gluten free foods to local food pantries announced today it has received 10 food collection bins designed and created by local artists Dr. Caly Meyers-Mixa and Jay Mixa

“I am passionate about the Mend Hunger mission because my sisters and I have celiac disease. We know what it is like to live with dietary restrictions and how powerless you can feel when you do not have the ability to advocate for your own health. I would like people to imagine if they had to go to a food pantry and were unable to get food appropriate for their medically restricted diet – having to choose between being hungry or feeling healthy,” said Dr. Caly Meyers-Mixa.

Mend Hunger is filling the growing need for access to no-cost foods that support a medically necessary diet among people with financial need. Without access to safe and nutritious foods, parents and children are often left choosing between health and hunger. Mend Hunger is the only source of no-cost allergy safe and gluten free food in the Illinois tri-state area.

The donated bins will be used in 5 food drives during the month of May. Food drive locations include: Redfin, North Shore Chiropractic, Imagination, Wellness House, and Tanya D Realty with Jennings on the Park.

“I was excited that Mend Hunger asked me to use my creative skills to design their donation bins. I hope the bins convey the Mend Hunger mission and get people excited about donating allergy safe and gluten free products,” added Dr. Caly Meyers-Mixa.
