GLENCOE, IL — Two people were injured after a Metra train crashed into a car Monday in Glencoe, according to village and railway officials.

Trains were halted on both directions of the Union Pacific North Line after an approaching train struck a car near the intersection of Park Avenue and Old Green Bay Road shortly after 4 p.m.

A man and woman in the car were taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening after a train struck their car.

At least one of them needed to be extricated from the sedan, according to WMAQ. A Metra spokesperson told WLS that there was no indication the crossing gates at the Park Avenue crossing were malfunctioning at the time of the crash.

Train No. 343 had been due to pass through Glencoe at 4:06 p.m. and arrive in Waukegan at 4:39 p.m. After it collided with the car, Metra service was interrupted in both directions for nearly three hours.

Metra police are tasked with investigating the circumstances of the crash.
