New Trier High School Ranked 10th In Illinois, 285th In Nation

U.S. News and World Report ranked New Trier the fourth-best public high school in the state, excluding selective enrollment schools.

WINNETKA, IL — New Trier High School was ranked the 10th top high school in Illinois and No. 285 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

The approximately 3,000-student high school has an Advanced Placement participation rate of 62 percent, with 60 percent of students passing at least one AP exam, according to U.S. News.

Mathematics proficiency is 81 percent, reading proficiency is 82 percent and the graduation rate is 98 percent, which U.S. News classified as "well above" the median for Illinois.

According to U.S. News, the rankings aim to compare how well public schools prepare students for college-level work and teach students basic skills.

New Trier High School's No. 10 in-state ranking this year is an improvement from 2021's No. 14 in Illinois ranking. It is also higher than NTHS's No. 13 state ranking in 2020 and its No. 15 ranking in 2019.

The 2022 edition of U.S. News' high school rankings used data from the 2019-20 school year, which was adjusted to compensate for the effects of COVID-19, according to U.S. News.

Most schools closed before state testing in the spring of 2020, and federal education officials granted a waiver to skip testing that year, so U.S. News used assessment data from the prior three years.

In Illinois, the top five schools in the rankings were selective enrollment high schools in Chicago Public Schools, with the No. 6 school a selective enrollment suburban school — Proviso Math and Science Academy.

Among suburban public high schools that accept all residents, only Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Vernon Hills High School and Hinsdale Central High School ranked higher than New Trier.

Among other North Shore public schools, Lake Forest High School ranked No. 11 in the state, Deerfield High School ranked No. 14, Glenbrook South ranked No. 18, Glenbrook North was 20th and Evanston Township High School was 41st.
