New Trier rowers take top spots at Milwaukee race

NEW TRIER ROWERS TAKE TOP SPOTS AT MILWAUKEE RIVER REGATTA

New Trier crews rowed strong at the Milwaukee River Challenge on September 18, 2021, under sunny skies, taking top spots in both Mens and Womens Junior races.

In the Mens Jr. 8+, the New Trier 1st Varsity boat took first place, with other New Trier crews earning second, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth places in the race.

In the Womens Jr. 8+, New Trier crews took second and third places, with other Womens’ boats coming in sixth, seventh, eight and tenth. In the Mens Jr. 4+ race, New Trier captured first, third and fourth. New Trier Women’s crews finished first, fifth and eighth in the Womens Jr. 4+ competition.

“It was great for the team and parents to be back in action at a regatta competing again,” said Rose Marchuk, Program Director, Head Coach and Varsity Girls Coach. “After lots of training, this was the first fall head race for many girls on the team who lost their prior fall season to Covid-related regatta cancellations. The depth of talent was evident by the strong race results. We look forward to refining our technique for Head of the Rock in a couple of weeks in Rockford.

Coach Nate Kelp-Lenane called it “a great day for the boys’ squad. Their efforts on the water showed their strength and depth of the squad. It was great to see crews keep composure and push together.”

The race took rowers through the heart of downtown Milwaukee, visible to spectators from the Riverwalk and from the many bridges along the course. “It felt amazing to be back on the water in an actual regatta and be able to cheer on my teammates,” said senior and Co-Captain Chloe Burne.

“It was a gritty race, but New Trier absolutely dominated in the Junior varsity boys category,” said team Co-Captain Mateo Miller, also a senior. “This brings us one step closer on our road to Boston and the Head of the Charles Regatta.”
