North Shore’s girls’ Varsity basketball team defeated Uplift Community High School 55-43 Thursday night to celebrate the return of team scoring leader Annie Kroll, who had been sidelined six weeks with a knee injury. Kroll had seven points, several key rebounds and her best passing game of the year.
“She gave us important leadership and did a great job both defensively and pushing the ball up the floor,” said coach Dana Leonard. “Uplift was a quick team, but our girls got the ball out on the run quickly and capitalized at the other end.”
Forward Grace Ati led the scoring with 18 points, but Leonard cast the spotlight on two other key performances. “Lauren Kaplinsky played fantastic defense on their point guard and leading scorer…She completely shut her down in the second half. Six-foot center Claire McCarthy had the best game of her career. She is now shooting on balance and with great touch which adds an important dimension to our offense as she is also an excellent passer in the post.”
The Raiders are now 5-6 as they head into a four-game week beginning with Tuesday’s home match against ISL rival Elgin Academy, followed by a Wednesday trip to Lake Forest Academy, a Friday home game with Providence-St. Mel and Saturday afternoon’s engagement with Universal, as part of the School’s annual Basketball Bash, which begins that morning and features a game with every boys’ and girls’ team from sixth grade through Varsity level.
The event will again serve as a fund-raising platform for Dunk Alzheimer’s, a fund-raising effort founded by current NSCDS senior Jonathan Segal in 2013 that has raised more than $10,000 in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association’s Illinois Chapter.
