9-Year-Old Accused Of Felonies, Corporate Laptop Stolen: Northfield Crime Reports

Northfield Police Blotter: July 9 - July 24

NORTHFIELD, IL — The following information comes from the Northfield Police Department as a record of police activity and incidents reported to police. Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced, and an arrest is not an indication of guilt. Everyone named below is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

BURGLARY (SOLVED)

A 9-year-old Northfield boy was found to be responsible for a July 3 incident during which police were called to Lohre Painting Company for a burglary report around July 3. Police were told someone had entered the building between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on July 1 and clogged up all the sinks, turning on the water and flooding bathrooms, halls and kitchens. He caused an estimated $40,000 damage to the business, located at 1750 Harding Road. After being identified on July 7, the boy faces a hearing in juvenile court on felony burglary and criminal damage to property charges.

CANNABIS

A 46-year-old Chicago man was cited for possession of cannabis after he was pulled over on July 12 at 12:19 a.m. and the officer conducting the traffic stop smelled strong odor of burnt cannabis. The man handed over a plastic bag containing green plant material.

SPEEDING

A 26-year-old Wheeling man was arrested on July 13 at 7:07 a.m. on eastbounch Willow Road passing over I-94. He was charged with excessive speeding for driving 62 mph in a 30 mph zone and driving with a revoked license.

IDENTITY THEFT

Someone made $5,618.83 in unauthorized purchases in Orland Park on July 13. A Northfield resident told police at 8:15 p.m. that earlier in the evening someone had opened an account in the resident's name. The incident remains under investigation.

FLEEING

At 4:49 a.m. on July 14, police tied to stop a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on the 1600 block of Willow Road. The vehicle fled from the officer, turning first onto Lockwood Avenue and then onto Mt. Pleasant Street before the officer discontinued the attempts to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle, which was later found to have been reported stolen out of Glencoe, was found abandoned after apparently striking the garage of a home in the 1600 block of Mt. Pleasant Street.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

A black SUV drove through yellow tape blocking access to a freshly sealed driveway, a resident in the 500 block of North Happ Road reported July 14 at 12:45 p.m. The SUV then backed out of the driveway, causing $2,500 worth of damage to the freshly poured asphalt.

THEFT

On July 14, a resident in the 100 block of W Frontage Road reported that a $700 Jamis Coda Sport Femme 2016 Blue/Gray Hybrid Road bicycle with small red handle bag and pink water bottle holder was stolen from her property between 8 a.m. July 13 and 12:45 p.m. July 14.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

A 28-year-old Schiller Park man was arrested on July 19 at 8:55 a.m. in the 1300 block of Willow Road and charged with driving on a suspended license and improper use of a communication device.

LAPTOP THEFT

A resident reported on the morning of July 20 that someone had entered an unlocked car parked in front of a home and stole a corporate laptop containing "a vast amount of customer information," although the data was encrypted with passwords.

VEHICLE BURGLARIES

Northfield police said 45 vehicles were burglarized and one was stolen during the overnight hours of July 20 through July 22 in the following locations.

  • Eight on the 100 and 200 blocks of Riverside Drive
  • Four on the 200 block of Lagoon Drive
  • Four on the 200 and 300 block of Bristol Street
  • Four on the 1900 block of Bosworth Lane
  • Three on the 1800 block of Stockton Drive
  • Three on the first block of Robin Hood Lane
  • Three on the 200 block of Dickens Street
  • Two on the 100 block of Avon Avenue
  • Two on the 200 block of Ingram Street
  • Two on the 200 block of Eaton Street
  • Two on the 1900 block of Willow Hills Court
  • Two on the 200 block of Jeffrey Street
  • Two on the 1700 block of Harding Road
  • One on the 300 block of Graemere Street
  • One on the 100 block of Northfield Road

CAR STOLEN, RETURNED

One vehicle had been left unlocked with the keys inside. Police were told someone took the vehicle, drove it around and then returned it to the same driveway from which it had been stolen. When the car was returned, items were found inside that did not belong to the vehicle's owners.

IDENTITY THEFT

Someone opened up several unauthorized credit cards using the personal information of a Northfield resident, police were told on July 22. A $260 charge was accrued at Lowes and a $2,000 charge from Nordstroms. The incident remains under investigation.
