Pickpockets Spent Thousands Using Stolen Cards: Police

Video surveillance helps bust one pickpocket but her partner remains at large, police say.

WINNETKA, IL — An investigation into a café pickpocketing incident last month resulted in one arrest, as police continue to seek a second suspect. After a woman's wallet was stolen from her purse while inside a shop, someone accrued more than $5,000 in unauthorized charges on her cards, according to police.

Misty C. Mueller, 38, of the 2700 block of South 61st Avenue in Cicero, was arrested May 15 for identity theft (for allegedly using stolen credit cards) and theft by deception (for allegedly stealing a wallet) in connection with a theft reported April 27 at 566 Chestnut St. in Winnetka, police said.

According to Winnetka Police Deputy Chief Marc Hornstein, there were two thieves, a man and a woman, identified and tracked down through video surveillance. He said the victim suspected something was amiss at the time. She confronted the pair, who denied having stolen another and left.

Mueller's partner in crime remains at large, police said.

But detectives reviewed surveillance video from inside the restaurant and managed to track down locations in which her stolen cards had been used. It turned out the same people who were visible stealing the wallet in Winnetka were on tape using the stolen cards at multiple locations in Skokie. Chicago police participated in the investigation and arrested Mueller at her home, Hornstein said.
