Reconstruction Planned for 2 Winnetka Bridges

A $170,000 project calls for a full replacement of both the Oak Street and Cherry Street bridges.

An engineering study and cost estimate for a complete replacement of both the Oak Street and Cherry Street bridges in Winnetka has been approved.

Public Works Assistant Director Jim Bernahl told the Council last week that a project is planned to completely replace both bridges at a cost of $170,000, which will partially be funded by the national Surface Transportation Funding Project, according to the Winnetka Talk.

Baxter & Woodman Engineering firm will conduct phase 1 of the project, which includes the engineering study and cost estimate.

Both bridges have needed periodic repair since their construction in the 1940s. The Baxter & Woodman plan would call for a more long-term solution, ideally not requiring any work for several decades.

The current plan shows the Oak Street bridge being repaired during the summer of 2017 and the Cherry Street bridge the following year.
