Storms Cause Power Outages, Flooding, Downed Trees In Wilmette

WILMETTE, IL — Extreme weather caused power outages, flooding and downed trees in Wilmette Monday.

Village officials said that crews received a high volume of calls for service due to storm-related damage.

"Village crews are responding to storm-related reports as quickly as possible, and there is currently a high volume of calls. Thank you for your patience as we respond to issues throughout the community," officials said in a statement.

Hundreds of ComEd customers lost power on Monday during the storm. In the Wilmette area, 65 outages cut power for 2,884 customers, according to ComEd.

Nearby in Skokie and Evanston, debris falling onto train tracks suspended service on both the Yellow and Purple lines, according to the Chicago Transit Authority.

Some Metra trains on the Union Pacific North were also canceled or severely delayed due to high winds.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for much of Cook County, with wind gusts of up to 60 mph reported.

"Any storms that develop may become severe and feature damaging to destructive wind gusts, large hail, and localized flash flooding. Outside of areas impacted by afternoon thunderstorms, dangerous
heat and humidity will continue through the remainder of this afternoon," forecasters said.

Wilmette officials encouraged residents to call 911 to report downed power lines and other immediate threats to safety. Non-emergencies, such as downed trees or flooding, can be reported by calling 847-251-2700 or 847-256-1200 after hours.
