Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Partnership Established

Family Service of Glencoe and the Village of Glencoe are partnering in September to eliminate the stigma surrounding discussions of suicide.

The Village of Glencoe and Family Service of Glencoe (FSG) have partnered to promote National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month throughout September. Together the organizations are working to help eliminate the stigma of suicide in our community by providing educational materials on the risk factors and warning signs of suicide, and by encouraging positive discussion around and the use of mental health resources.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports that over 44,000 Americans die by suicide each year, and in Illinois, one person dies by suicide every six hours. One in five Americans adults and children will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime, yet, many of those people who die by suicide never seek out or receive effective mental health services.

“Because of the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, too many people who are struggling remain silent and never connect with the mental health treatment they need,” explained Kathy Livingston, LCSW, Clinical Director of Family Service of Glencoe. “Sometimes all it takes is one conversation from a friend, family member or colleague to help convince someone to seek professional help. It’s as easy as saying “I’m concerned about you” or “I’ve noticed you seem different lately, is everything okay?”

The message is simple: if you see something, say something. All community members are encouraged to take time this month to review the information and links to more resources available on the Family Service of Glencoe website at www.familyserviceofglencoe.org. Materials include lists of risk factors and warnings signs, and tips for starting those hard conversations.

The community is reminded that in emergencies call 911 or go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room. If in a crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text TALK to 74174.
