Fatal Shooting In Northfield, Arrest In Winnetka After Standoff

Police said a 72-year-old Northfield attorney was shot and killed after an argument in his home Monday.

WINNETKA, IL — A suspect in the fatal shooting of a Northfield lawyer was arrested after a standoff with heavily armed police in Winnetka Monday night, police said. Northfield police said the deadly "domestic related" shooting took place around 7:19 p.m. in the 200 block of Latrobe Avenue.

Stephen M. Shapiro, 72, was identified as the victim, according to the police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was found shot at his home and pronounced dead around 8 p.m. Police are investigating his death as a homicide. The suspected shooter then fled to an apartment in the area of Tower and Green Bay roads in Winnetka, according to police.

Heavily armed police surrounded the area and directed residents in the area to stay inside. After a standoff with SWAT teams that shut down traffic for more than an hour, the suspect was taken into custody around 10:35 p.m., police said.

The arrested man had not been charged as of Tuesday morning. Police said he was being interviewed by the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force and expect to file criminal charges.

Shapiro was a partner at the law firm of Mayer Brown, where he was the founder and senior member of its Supreme Court and appellate practice, according to an online biography. He served as deputy solicitor general under Ronald Reagan and has argued 30 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
