While in Washington, our goal is to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the importance of Congressional leadership to help advance research to cure, treat, and prevent the disease. We want to thank Congress for their support for federal funding for T1D research and promote the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP).
Established in 1997, the SDP has received broad, bipartisan support from Congress since its enactment. Funded at $150 million, it represents one-third of all federal research on T1D through the NIH and complements the $110 million that JDRF invested in 2012 for T1D research. Studies funded by the SDP will help translate early discoveries supported by the program into better treatments and ultimately a cure for people with diabetes. We are encouraging lawmakers to pass a three year extension of the SDP.
