Trevian Boys Roundup: Baseball Coach Wins 700th Career Game

Water Polo: Coach David Goodspeed’s frustration was evident immediately following  in the IHSA Northbrook Sectional championship game.

For the last six years now, New Trier hasn’t been able to advance to the state championships. Despite being the No. 1 seed in this year’s sectional, New Trier couldn’t finish the job.

“The refs gave us a lot of kick-outs, but we only scored on about half of them,” said Goodspeed, whose team struggled to score against Loyola’s defense.

New Trier will have some experienced players coming back for next year’s squad, but Goodspeed said they didn’t produce much in Saturday’s final.

“The younger kids especially did not play well [Saturday],” Goodspeed said. “We really thought that they would be a spark.”

New Trier defeated Niles West in the quarterfinals on Thursday and Evanston in the semifinals on Friday before the championship match.

Baseball: Coach Mike Napoleon won his 700^th career game as the Trevians defeated Maine South, 9-7, last week. It took Napoleon only 26 seasons to accumulate his 700 victories and he became only the seventh manager to do so in IHSA history.

Previously the head coach at Notre Dame and Providence, Napoleon has led New Trier to two state championships (2000 and 2009) and two runner-ups (1999 and 2007)

Volleyball: New Trier (27-6, 7-1 CSL South) suffered its first conference loss of the season last week. The Trevians fell to Maine South in two tight games 26-24, 25-22.

The loss came on day after New Trier easily dispatched Waukegan 25-14, 25-8. Eric Kerr had four kills, four aces and 14 assists while Alex Cook chipped in with six kills.

Tennis: New Trier continued its quest to repeat as state champions by taking the CSL South championship last weekend. The Trevians (36 points) edged Glenbrook South (32) and third-place Evanston (24).

Defending state champion Robert Stineman, who will be attending Stanford next fall, won the No. 1 singles while Tom Fawcett and Drew Campbell combined to win the No. 1 doubles championship.

Track: Tommy King made his last home race one to remember. The senior broke a CSL South record, winning the 3200 in 9:06.8.

Junior Leland Later edged Maine South’s Dave Eckhart in the 1600 (4:24.2) to win the conference title.

Sophomore Taylor Alarcon was the third individual champion for New Trier, jumping 44-2.75 in the triple jump to claim the title. The Trevians won the 4x800 relay in 8:19.6.

New Trier will prepare for Thursday’s IHSA Class 3A Skokie Sectional held at Niles West.
