Trevian Boys Roundup: Lacrosse Notches Another Big Win

Water Polo: The 4-5 record that New Trier sported nine games into the season didn’t mean much to coach David Goodspeed. He had set out a challenging schedule at the start to provide a benchmark for his team.

“Although we had a losing record, we felt like it has been a good start to the season because we were in every game versus very good opponents,” Goodspeed said. 

Of those five early season losses, four of them were to top 10 teams with the other coming against Loyola Academy at home after beating the Ramblers on the road.

The tough early schedule has paid off for the No. 14 Trevians, who have gone 6-1 in their last seven games to pull their record to 10-6. New Trier has won its first five games in Central Suburban League (CSL) play, and took down Niles West, 13-2, on April 14. Before that, New Trier had a tough 15-11 victory over Evanston on April 12.

In an invitational tournament during the weekend, New Trier went 2-1, beating Fremd and Lockport in a couple of close contests. The only loss came to yet another top 10 team, as McHenry edged out the Trevians 11-8.

In case there isn’t enough motivation, New Trier finds itself playing Loyola later on this season. The Ramblers are ranked No. 10 in the most recent Illpolo.com media poll.

Lacrosse: After easing back into CSL South play with a  on Thursday, New Trier took down another top-ranked opponent on Saturday.

Lyons Township, the No.1 team in the state according to Laxpower.com, provided another measuring stick for a Trevian team looking for its seventh consecutive state title.

Chad Sawyer and Mick Parks each scored three goals and the Trevian defense held Lyons Township to only three goals in an 11-3 victory at home.

Baseball: New Trier’s pitching has been the consistent element all season and Nick Hedge, Brian Kost and John Cook continued the trend last week. Hedge struck out 11 and gave up five hits in five innings, leading New Trier (7-4 overall, 1-1 CSL South) to a 7-6 victory over St. Viator. Kost allowed only two hits over six innings a day later as the Trevians pounded Niles North 8-0.

But the offense didn’t support Cook in his quest to give New Trier an undefeated week against Deerfield. Cook pitched 8 1/3 innings, gave up four hits and two runs, but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors defeated New Trier for only the second time in the last 19 years. Cook gave up two doubles in the ninth inning that enabled Deerfield to win in walk-off fashion.

Volleyball: No. 5 New Trier had its seven-game winning streak snapped on Friday night as Glenbrook North took down the Trevians, 25-20, 25-16. It was only the third loss of the season for New Trier (12-3).

Last week, the Trevians secured a 25-14, 25-18 victory against Niles West on April 12. Eric Kerr had 13 assists and Joe Coyne contributed nine digs for the Trevians.

Tennis: New Trier’s tennis team got another victory over Deerfield last week, but the bigger story was Hitoshi Kawashima returned to the court. He is an invaluable contributor for the Trevians.
