Trevian Boys Roundup: Later Takes Cross-Country Invitational Title

The golf team showcases its depth in recent tourney; soccer bounces back for win and tie.

CROSS-COUNTRY - Senior Leland Later is proving to everyone in Illinois that he is indeed a contender to win the state cross-country championship this fall. Later took home the individual title against a talented field at the Hornet-Red Devil Invitational last weekend and helped lead New Trier (99) to a third-place finish with a time of nearly 15 minutes and 8 seconds in the 2.97-mile race.

Eric Underwood (15:49), Chip Schaff (15:55), Ethan Kaplan (15:57) and Andrew Murdoch (16:26) rounded out New Trier’s top five finishers.

Nequa Valley (41) and Palatine (58) finished first and second, respectively.

GOLFThe Trevians finished in fifth place as a team at the Buffalo Grove Invite. New Trier was missing some of its top varsity golfers, but Ian Wright shot a 72 to take eighth place individually. Austin Rendell shot 74 while Kevin Park (79), Jack Lindbland (80), Matt Forloine (80) and George Voris (82) also scored for New Trier.

New Trier won its last dual meet 159-196 against Waukegan on Aug. 30. Nick Abbott took home medalist honors with a 34.

The Trevians face Central Suburban League South rival Evanston in a dual match at Wilmette Golf Course on Sept. 8.

FOOTBALL - New Trier capitalized on five Warren turnovers to get a crucial 21-7 victory on the road on Sept. 2. Jack O’Malley had two fumble recoveries and defensive back Chris Hall returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown to lead New Trier’s defensive efforts.

The Trevians have a good shot at improving to 2-1 with a road game against Highland Park on Sept. 9.

SOCCER - New Trier went 1-0-1 in its last two games at the Barrington Invitational, rebounding from a 2-1 loss to Wheaton South in the tournament’s opening game and a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Lake Zurich.

The Trevians beat Barrington 2-1 on Sept. 1 and followed it up with a 1-1 tie against Marmion two days later.

New Trier will get another big test when it travels to Maine West, the defending sectional champion, on Sept. 8.
