The Lightweights game against Lake Forest was a tale of two halves. After stopping Lake Forest on their opening drive and getting pinned on its own 2 yard line after a Lake Forest punt, the GreenWave lightweights came out flinging and fighting. An 11 yard pass from Carson Ochsenhirt to Danny Passeri on the team’s first offensive play gave the GreenWave much needed breathing room. A steady ground game drove the ball to midfield where the drive eventually stalled.
For the remainder of the first half the GreenWave defense consistently brought pressure up the middle to disrupt Lake Forest’s offense. Nosetackle Marcos Nordenstahl and middle linebacker Robbie Healy spent a lot of time in the Lake Forest backfield and combined on several plays resulting in lost yardage for Lake Forest.
Late in the first half, the GreenWave offense exploded for two long pass plays, first to Andrew Keller, then to Danny Passeri, who was brought down at the Lake Forest two yard line. Three plays later, fullback Chamberlain Coffee powered in for the score.
On the following series, Coffee intercepted a Lake Forest pass and ran 35 yards for a touchdown. Despite an errant snap on the point after attempt the GreenWave adlibbed to convert a one point conversion to hold a 13-0 advantage going into halftime.
When the second half opened, Lake Forest was intent on showing why it is a perennial power at the lightweight level. A GreenWave fumble on the kickoff gave Lake Forest the ball near midfield, which then drove for a touchdown. A case of fumblitis ailed the GreenWave offense on its next two series and turnovers progressively shortened field for Lake Forest, opening the door for the go ahead score. Up 14-13 midway through the fourth quarter, Lake Forest added another touchdown and kicked the PAT to make the final score 22-13.
Despite the wet conditions the GreenWave played exceptionally well, and for the most part, the offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage. Turnovers that forced the defense to defend extremely short fields in the second half made the difference in the game. Protecting the ball and avoiding turnovers is something the coaching staff will work on this week.
Each week the Green Wave program designates a Player of the Week from each team. Notables for the week ending 9/15 include: Kevin Conahgan from Heavyweights, Robbie Healy from Lightweights, Drew Robinson from Middlweights, Cain Humphries from Flyweights, Brad Johnson from 4th grade Green Team and Charlie Watson from 4th grade Wave team.
