Willow Road Stormwater Tunnel Could Cost Nearly $60 Million: Firm
Longer deep sewer tunnel that's required part of reason behind cost increase.

The cost of a proposed Willow Road stormwater tunnel appears to be much higher than originally estimated three years ago.
Joe Johnson, Project Manager of MWH Global, the engineering firm which was awarded a contract to design the project, estimated the project’s cost to come at $58.5 million, according to the Daily North Shore. In 2012, the Christopher B. Burke Engineering firm had provided the village of Winnetka with an estimate of $34.6 million for the same project.

A greater length of deep sewer tunnel is required due to a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District interceptor conflict is the cause for much of the reason behind the expected cost increase, Johnson said.
Steve Saunders, Winnetka’s director of engineering, advised the Council to authorize a permitting process to determine the project’s feasibility and to hire an independent engineering firm to conduct a cost validation analysis. The cost for those two endeavors would equal about $150,000.
