Winnetka Couple Will Donate Garden to Hubbard Woods School

Brian and Linda O'Toole made the donation in honor of a late family member who loved gardening.

A 30-square-foot garden will be installed near the west entrance of Hubbard Woods Elementary School this fall thanks to a gift from Brian and Linda O’Toole of Winnetka.

The couple is making the $7,800 donation for the installation of the garden in memory of Linda’s aunt Ruth, who died at age 91 recently after a lifetime of gardening, according to the Winnetka Talk.

“She for her entire life was an avid gardener and an early pioneer of composting,” Linda said. “We wanted to do something that would honor her memory and her life. We really want to create something that is strong and long-lasting.”

The garden will be implemented into the curriculum at the school “at all grade levels,” principal Daniel Ryan added. It will also benefit the school’s Green Team, a volunteer group of students that meet regularly with the faculty to discuss ways to reduce waste and increase sustainability.
