Winnetka Girl Creates News Source for Teens

Rachel Cantor teams with another "new junkie" from New York to present The Dawtor.

A senior at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka is the co-founder of The Dawtor, a news source targeted for teenage girls.

The North Shore Weekend magazine and Daily North Shore tell the story of Rachel Cantor, who partnered with a teen girl from New York named Sophia to launch the website. It covers world, national and local issues - but in a way that’s geared to the teenage audience.

“It’s important to be informed about the world around you,” Cantor said. “Most teenage girls don’t tend to read the newspaper. We talked about why that is. Why don’t these girls read the news? We came to this conclusion that the language is not geared toward a teenage audience—it’s complicated. So we decided to create an online blog that posts current event summaries for teenage girls in a way that appeals to them through pop culture references, jokes, and easy to understand language.”
