Winnetka Kitchen Remodel Wins Local Design Competition
This Winnetka kitchen remodel proves that small kitchens can still enjoy an open layout. It won a Chicagoland Remodeling Excellence Award.
A Winnetka kitchen remodel completed by Normandy Designer Karen Chanan has received a Remodeling Excellence Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) of Greater Chicagoland. Overall, Chanan created an open-concept layout with a classic aesthetic that stayed true to the style of the home.
“Open-concept kitchens are an extremely popular request and many prefer it for entertaining purposes,” said Chanan. “Open-concept layouts also create uninterrupted lines of sight and can allow for more natural light.”
Before the renovation, the kitchen and family room were adjacent, but separated by a peninsula. To open things up, Karen removed the peninsula and reconfigured the layout. Ultimately, this created a more cohesive and unified space.

“When it came to the layout, the homeowners were open to various options, but wanted to try and incorporate an island into the design,” added Karen. “In the end, we included an island with seating. Relocating the range and the sink made room for a pantry and more countertop space. Now, the sink also faces outdoors, which is a visual improvement.”
In addition to a functional and open layout, the design also includes classic, yet updated touches, including white cabinetry, vintage lighting, an apron front sink, soft green subway tile and chrome cup pulls.

Chanan’s renovation was one of 13 renovations to receive a Remodeling Excellence Award. Winners were evaluated by an impartial panel of judges, comprised of industry experts. The judging criteria included problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty.
