Winnetka Obituary: Eliot B. Spiess, 93
Former Army Air Corps pilot had distinguished career, PhD from Harvard.

Eliot B. Spiess, 93, of Winnetka passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Evanston NorthShore Hospital.
Eliot was born in the Dorchester section of Boston, Massachusetts on October 13, 1921. Graduation from Harvard College in January, 1943 included officer cadet training. As an Army Air Corps pilot, Eliot flew 51 combat missions in a B-17 (15th Air Force, 2nd Bomb group, 96th squadron) from Foggia, Italy beginning in September 1944. Returning to graduate school at Harvard on the G. I. bill, Eliot completed a PhD in Biology (genetics) in 1949.
After marriage in June, 1951 to Luretta Davis of Oak Park, Illinois, Eliot began a teaching and research career in genetics at the University of Pittsburgh (1952 - 1963) and the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (1963- 1989). His career included authorship of a widely-used college textbook (Genes in Populations), over 50 scientific research papers, and editorship of the journal Evolution.
Eliot is survived by his wife of 63 years, sons Arthur and Bruce, and three grandchildren, and many, many students. Memorial service plans at Winnetka Congregational Church are pending.
