Winnetka Public Schools Participate In Hour of Code

Students of all ages taught each other and their parents during the international computer science educational event.

From Winnetka Public Schools: Over 35 parents and children--from preschool children to middle school students--participated in various coding and technology activities as part of the international event #HourofCode on December 4, 2017.

#HourofCode aligned with Computer Science Education Week from December 4-10, which is dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science. Highlights of this engaging learning opportunity for the whole family including tinkering with robotics, attempting design challenges, and experimenting with circuitry. Students of all ages were involved with teaching each other--and their parents--during #HourofCode. The event took place in The Skokie School MakerSpace, one of the District’s five STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts, and Math) environments.

“As a District, we strive to provide our students with access to the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world,” says Maureen Miller, Director of Technology. “In our STEAM environments, students are encouraged to explore, take risks, collaborate, and problem-solve together. The skills taught and lessons learned in our STEAM spaces help prepare our students emotionally and socially to participate in a global, collaborative economy. It was fantastic to welcome parents and younger siblings to learn more about STEAM as part of #HourofCode.”
