Message from the Village: Prescription Burn at Greene Valley Forest Preserve Taking Place Monday

Residents should not be alarmed if they see smoke in the area.

A prescription burn is taking place Monday at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Bolingbrook near Greene Road and 79th Street, according to a Village of Woodridge press release.

Residents should not be alarmed at the sight of smoke in the area, the release said. Local fire-protection agencies have been notified. Signs have been posted indicating that the burn is taking place.

"Unlike a wildfire, a prescription burn is a deliberately set, controlled, natural-resource-management tool that specially trained crews have used for over 25 years to restore native prairies, wetlands and woodlands," the release said.

"In the coming weeks, the public may see signs of more prescription-burn programs taking place at several Forest Preserve properties. Because safety depends on the weather and other factors, the prescription burns cannot be scheduled in advance and therefore specific dates are not available. However, on the morning of a prescription burn, the Forest Preserve District posts signs and crews remain on-site throughout the process, which takes place only during daylight hours."
