Smooth Jazz Fest Returns to Wheaton This Summer

The Wheaton Park District—together with WPJC.fm—is bringing jazz to Memorial Park in Wheaton for the second year in a row.  

The event, which will take place from 3 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, will feature acclaimed jazz artists, attract more than 800 music lovers, and offer a fest experience with wine, beer, and culinary treats from local food vendors.

Roland Gresham, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, will perform at 4:15 pm.  He has performed throughout North America, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. Roland’s music appeals to a broad audience and to date more than 150,000 copies of his music have been sold. His latest project, Memories of Michael Jackson is receiving rave reviews 

Next, Scott Allman a DuPage County native (Naperville) and an up-and-coming contemporary jazz keyboardist and composer whose music is a colorful palette balancing dynamic grooves with expressive melodies will perform at 6:15 pm. Scott's debut CD, Generations is receiving wide-reaching praise and acclaim. Darren Rahn will be a featured guest with Allman. Rahn is a  master’s level jazz graduate from the University of Northern Colorado. 

Lastly, Donald Hayes will perform at 8 pm. Over the past 15 years Donald Hayes has become one of the most sought-after musicians and arrangers.  Hayes’ music has been featured on countless recordings he is widely considered the best saxophonist in the country. 

The event will be hosted by local smooth jazz DJ Rick O’Dell. O’Dell produced and hosted the first Smooth Jazz show on Chicago radio, “The Sunday Lite Brunch,” which aired on WCLR 102-FM from 1987 to 1989.  

Then, from 1990 through 2009, he hosted the highly rated midday show and the “Smooth Jazz SundayBrunch” on WNUA 95.5.  He also served as Music Director and Program Director of the station during its later years.  

O’Dell says, “The lineup features something for everyone, with a good cross-section of contemporary jazz styling’s and instrumentation.  Young people who play an instrument as well as their parents and fans of contemporary jazz in general will enjoy performances by some talented players.  Add in some tasty food and refreshing beverages, and you've got the makings of a perfect Saturday evening at Memorial Park.”
